Spy Cameras are available in a huge supply of different designs and disguises with even more range in quality and price. This hub is designed to introduce you to the various type of spy cameras available for purchase and the advantages and disadvantages each of the various models hold.
I aim to cover spy cameras ranging from smaller devices such as the spy camera pen up to larger pinhole cameras to bigger still wireless spy cameras. My aim is to give you a complete guide containing full details of the various features and a rough guide to the prices you would expect to be paying. Highlighting where you really get value for money.
Spy pens are probably my most favorite of all the hidden spy cameras available today and one of the best selling. They are small, compact and able to act independently of any other devices. This makes then cheap and extremely affordable. They include a small camera located just above the pen clip which is only the size of a large pinhole.
Spy cam
The most basic spy pen model will set you back $30-75. Now don't go expecting amazing results for this sort of money but you certainly should not turn your nose up. For this kind of price you can expect a camera which remains completely hidden and unnoticed. What suffers is the quality of the recording. Expect movement to almost certainly cause blurriness and lighting to play a huge role in the natural recording quality.
If your looking for a good quality spy pen camera then you should be looking at paying from $90 to $150. For this kind of money you would expect a fairly good level of recording whilst moving with minimal blurring effects. Whilst stationary you would expect the camera to adjust well to lighting conditions and shadows and produce footage which views at a high quality.
Button Spy Cameras
Button spy cameras are pretty much what you imagin. A small, usually black button is connected up to a camera, the pinhole lens records out of one of the small hole normally reserved for sewing the button to the garment. To use these deivces you simply remove the botton that uses the corresponding button hole and thread the button spy camera in its place.
The devices do have some very distinct disadvantages. The first and most prominent is that to keep it form being obvious you must wear a shirt containing black buttons. Very few models are made with a different color button, which can prove quite annoying.
These cameras are very high quality however, and the price reflects this. For $150 you would expect to get the camera and all necessary wiring to connect it to a DVR or Camcorder device for it to record. Yes that is $150 just for the camera. If you want to purchase a small compact DVR or camcorder with a descent sized memory of 20-30gb to hold plenty of footage you could expect to take that price up to $300-$400. It is a lot to pay, mini spy cameras of this type normally only find use in the private sector in the hands of private detective and the like.
Cheap models are available that work like the spy pen camera, but due to the constant movement of clothing and the bulky box that comes the is often noticeable behind the shirt I don't recommend these at all.
Out of the spy cameras the most variation exists with the pinhole camera. These cameras are only a few cm in size. Several types of this camera exist for slightly different uses although they contain the same basic build and variation in quality. It will be easier to organize this section by what you get for your money or the list would be endless.
$45 to $90 - Would buy you the some of the basic pinhole cameras. These cameras range from 0.8 to 1.2" in size. The smaller you go further you go towards the higher end of the price bracket.
$100-$160 - If your prepared to pay slightly more you will begin to see upgrades in the quality and options for your pinhole spy cameras. For this price you can get bullet cameras. These are great for use outdoors or in larger rooms. They are small enough to be mounted to a wall and stay unnoticed but contain pinhole cameras so can be hidden traditionally. Basic models for this price will contain small upgrades to quality, some will even include audio.
spy camera
$160-$400 - This is where the spy video cameras begin to go all out. They quality shoots through the roof and they begin to incorporate digital zoom, audio features, light adjustment and motion sensors, towards the higher range they even get motion trackers where they follow movement in the room. Digital zoom is a great feature and i highly recommend it. Don't expect to find it on a model under $190.
Button & Screw Pinhole Spy Camera
This video demonstrates on the the latest top of the range button / screw cameras, one of the most popular covert spy cameras. It features button and screw fittings which are interchangable. It will demonstrate acutal footage to you and give you a realistic idea of the size of these products.
